Purpose and Scope

The purpose of this course is to build upon the Level 1- Field Fundamentals Course, extending the knowledge and capabilities of the inspector regarding the application and inspection of single strand unbonded post-tensioning systems. This workbook and the corresponding workshop have been specifically produced for personnel involved in the field inspection of single strand unbonded post-tensioning systems. Specific procedures applicable to the installation of such systems are covered in separate PTI documents and programs.

This course is designed to teach an experienced inspector about the means and methods used to install post-tensioning systems. It is not intended to teach you how to inspect or how to be an inspector. The course will provide you with background knowledge of many post-tensioning techniques that may or may not apply to your specific situation. Always follow proper inspection procedures as outlined in your contractual obligations. It should also be noted that direction of the post-tensioning operations is typically under the general contractor's control.

This course will focus on inspection procedures and requirements as well as reading and interpretation of construction documents to verify that project requirements have been met in the field. This manual does not attempt to assign responsibilities to specific parties working on a project; rather it stresses the importance of understanding the individual responsibilities and emphasizes the importance of identifying the responsible parties for the purpose of facilitating proper communication and progression of the project. Although this course contains many references to concrete materials, formwork, and non-prestressed reinforcing, it is not intended to be a complete reference for inspection of these items.

It should be understood that while the details and recommendations presented in this manual are intended to represent generally accepted industry practice, the practices of individual companies on specific items (in particular, procedures for the operation of stressing equipment) may vary from the details and recommendations presented here. In the event of any conflict between this manual and the contract documents or written instructions from the post-tensioning supplier, the contract documents or written instructions should always govern.

Note that some of the procedures described herein may be hazardous to you and your co-workers. Completion of this course is not a substitution for hands-on experience or proper "in the field" training. In addition, this Instructional Manual is not intended to be a comprehensive specification regarding job site safety procedures.

Documents referenced in this course and available from PTI are:

→ Specification for single Strand Unbonded Tendons

→ Field Procedures Manual For Unbonded single Strand Tendons

→ Construction and Maintenance Procedures Manual for Post-Tensioned Slabs-On-Ground
