This specification has been declared "CANCELLED" by the Aerospace Materials Division, SAE, as of January 2012 and has been superseded by AMS 5618 for premium aircraft quality product. The requirements of the latest issue of AMS 5618, as applicable, shall be fulfilled whenever reference is made to the cancelled AMS 5880. By this action, this document will remain listed in the Numerical Section of the Index of Aerospace Materials Specifications, noting that it has been superseded by AMS 5618.
This specification covers a corrosion-resistant steel in the form of bars, wire, forgings, and forging stock.
These products have been used typically for anti-friction bearing parts requiring resistance to both corrosion and wear with hardness usually not lower than 58 HRC after hardening and tempering, but usage is not limited to such applications.
