THIS PAPER DISCUSSES THE PROCESS OF EMPLOYING DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURABILITY AND ASSEMBLY (DFMA) TO MEET AND EXCEED CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS FOR PRODUCTS AND QUALITY. THIS INVOLVES REVIEWING A NINE-STEP PROCESS FOR QUALITY IMPROVEMENT AND ITS APPLICATION TO DFMA ACTIVITIES. THE EMPHASIS IS ON DISCUSSION REGARDING THESE SUPPORT ACTIVITIES AND TYING THEM TO DFMA STEPS/ACTIVITIES. AREAS OF DISCUSSION INCLUDE: IDENTIFICATION OF CUSTOMERS AND SUPPLIERS, DFMA GOALS, CROSS-FUNCTIONAL TEAMS, PROCESS CHARACTERIZATION, BASELINING AND BENCHMARKING, DESIGN ACTIVITIES AND STRATEGIC/ACTION PLANNING. THE SUMMARY RELATES THESE ACTIVITIES TO A BASIC DFMA FLOW CHART.
