ADHESION OF POLYMERIC MATERIALS TO METAL SURFACES IS GOVERNED BY INTERFACIAL ACID/BASE INTERACTIONS. THESE INTERACTIONS ARE PREDICTABLE FROM THE MEASURED HEATS OF SURFACE ABSORPTION AND DESORPTION OF PROBE MOLECULES FROM DILUTE SOLUTION. DETERMINATION OF THE NUMBER AND RELATIVE STRENGTHS OF THESE SITES HAS BEEN SHOWN TO BE USEFUL IN PREDICTION OF RELATIVE ADHESION STRENGTHS OF POLYMER (POLY (ETHYLENE-CO-ACRYLIC ACID) ) TO METAL (ALUMINUM FOIL). THE TECHNIQUE OF FLOW MICROCALORIMETRY IS EMPLOYED FOR QUANTITATIVE DETERMINATION OF ACID AND BASIC SITES ON THE SURFACES OF THE METAL AND POLYMER. IT SHOWS THAT POLYMER TO ALUMINUM ADHESION IS DOMINATED BY LEWIS ACID/LEWIS BASE TYPE INTERACTION, AND THAT RESIDUAL SURFACE OILS ON THE ALUMINUM DO NOT SIGNIFICANTLY INTERFERE WITH THE CALORIMETRIC MEASUREMENT.
