THE SUBJECT HISTORY IS BRIEFLY REVIEWED WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO ADHESIVE SELECTION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS AND COMPUTATIONAL PROGRAMS WHICH HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN USED FOR JOINT DESIGN. THE LESSONS THAT MAY BE LEARNED FROM THEIR USE ARE EXAMINED IN A SEQUENCE OF RELATED AND IDEALIZED JOINT CONFIGURATIONS. THE THEME IS THEN EXPANDED WITH THE PROGRESSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A REALISTIC JOINT TO DEMONSTRATE HOW EVEN HIGHER TORQUES CAN BE ACCOMMODATED WITH THE PROGRESSIVE REFINEMENT OF THE OVERALL END FITTING DESIGN AS WELL AS ITS INTIMATE JOINT AREA. A CASE HISTORY IS SET AGAINST THIS BACKGROUND AND THE PAPER CONCLUDES WITH A SUMMARY OF PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE.
