This paper will discuss in detail the benefits that are gained from coil joining on the entry section of the tube or pipe mill. These benefits include increased yield, decreased scrap, and enhanced product quality. Additionally, the various welding methods for joining coil ends, which include TIG and MIG, will be discussed, along with the advantages of each process. The various welding fixtures will be presented in detail, as well as simple manual machines for small tube mills and more fully automated units used on large pipe mills. Finally, maintenance of the welding fixtures and the weld equipment will be discussed.
