The goal of the long-term plan is to eliminate the unpredictability of distortion and properties in heat treated components by theoretical and experimental study. The reported study is to solve the problems associated with the uncertain surface heat transfer conditions being used in the FEM (finite element method) models of quenching operations. We have developed a reliable computational method for determining the surface heat transfer coefficients from measured temperature histories in the quenched specimens. The developed methodology is expected to bring a higher level of accuracy in computer modeling of heat treating processes.
