Induction heating has been used since 1916 to heat treat metal parts for hardening. Induction heating takes place when an electrically conductive object is placed in a varying magnetic field. This varying magnetic field is invisible--it can't be seen and, in most cases, it is silent. When a metal object is placed in this varying magnetic field, heat is created by the electric current induced by the changing polarity of the magnetic field. This paper discusses the basics of induction heating as well as its history and finally some of the future trends we can expect.
