Low temperature vacuum heat treating offers unique advantages to a variety of industries including aerospace, automotive, electronics, household appliances, machine tool, and tool and die as well as commercial heat treaters who must serve all of these customers. This paper will discuss key factors required to optimize processing parameters in low temperature heat treatments by focusing on the following areas: benefits of vacuum heat treatment (quality, environmental issues, safety); critical considerations in vacuum designs (temperature uniformity); control issues (vacuum, partial pressure, positive pressure); heating and cooling rates; utility consumption; materials of construction; application areas and performance capabilities/requirements.
