Quenchant selection for steel heat treating has been an imprecise art at best. Selected approaches that have been employed in quenchant selection are reviewed here. Two possible alternatives that provide a more quantitative basis for quenchant selection based on cooling curve analysis are discussed here. One is based on quench factor analysis and the other is the use of the Minitech predictor computer program.
