THIS CASE STUDY DETAILS THE USE OF A METHACRYLATE-BASED TOOLING RESIN, HIGHLY FILLED WITH ALUMINUM, WHICH PROVIDES A SYSTEM FOR BUILDING THERMALLY CONTROLLED MOLDS. A HYBRID POLYESTER POLYURETHANE RESIN WAS USED WITH THE SUBJECT TOOL TO MAKE RESIN TRANSFER MOLDED (RTM) SPRAY BARS FOR A PRINTING PRESS. THE BENEFITS OF THE TOOLING RESIN INCLUDE COST AND TIME SAVINGS. ITS INHERENT PROPERTIES MAKE TOOLS WHICH HAVE GOOD HEAT CONDUCTIVITY, NEGLIGIBLE SHRINKAGE, GOOD COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH, AND A LOW COEFFICIENT OF THERMAL EXPANSION. OTHER SUITABLE APPLICATIONS FOR THIS SYSTEM, RIM AND COMPRESSION MOLDING, ALSO ARE DISCUSSED.
