NEW TECHNOLOGIES MUST PAY OFF ECONOMICALLY FOR AN AIRLINE. THE COMPOSITES INDUSTRY HAS REACHED A POINT WHERE IT RAISES THE QUESTION IF THERE IS A BALANCE BETWEEN AIRFRAME WEIGHT SAVINGS AND AVOIDANCE OF CORROSION PROBLEMS ON THE ONE SIDE AND ADDITIONAL MAINTENANCE BURDENS ON THE OTHER SIDE. THE FOLLOWING MAJOR OBJECTIVES ARE REACHED: FURTHER SUBSTITUTION OF METALS WITH COMPOSITES IN AREAS WHERE A SIGNIFICANT WEIGHT REDUCTION AND/OR A RELIEF IN MAINTENANCE BURDENS IS ACHIEVED; KNOWN DESIGN DEFICIENCIES ARE AVOIDED, AND THE RISK OF ENCOUNTERING UNKNOWN PROBLEMS IS KEPT AS LOW AS POSSIBLE.
