HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPOSITES USE HIGH-STRENGTH, HIGH-STIFFNESS, NON-EXTENSIBLE FIBERS SUCH AS GRAPHITE, GLASS OR KEVLAR. FABRICS PRODUCED FROM FIBERS SUCH AS GRAPHITE HAVE NO STRETCH. UNLIKE A FABRIC WOVEN FROM AN EXTENSIBLE YARN, IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO FORM A GRAPHITE FABRIC OVER A SHARPLY CONTOURED MOLD WITHOUT INCURRING WRINKLING OR BUCKLING. THEREFORE, TO PRODUCE COMPLEX-SHAPED COMPOSITE STRUCTURES WITHOUT TIME-CONSUMING PROCESSES SUCH AS CUTTING OR DARTING, OR MECHANICAL PROPERTY REDUCING BUCKLING, IT IS DESIRABLE TO USE FABRICS THAT ARE SHAPED DURING THE WEAVING PROCESS, OR CONTOUR WOVEN.
