THE TREND TOWARD LARGER COMPOSITE STRUCTURES HAS COMPLICATED THE TASK OF SURFACE MEASUREMENT FOR VERIFICATION. IT IS NOT ALWAYS PRACTICAL TO MOVE THE STRUCTURE OR TOOL TO A STATIONARY COORDINATE MEASURING MACHINE, AND MOST PORTABLE MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS LACK THE REQUIRED ACCURACY, OR REQUIRE LONG SET-UP AND MEASUREMENT TIMES. IN ADDITION, RAPID SURFACE DIGITIZATION OFFERS NEW ADVANTAGES IN AREAS SUCH AS RAPID PROTOTYPING, PROCESS CONTROL, LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS FOR TOOLS, AND CONFORMANCE TO ENGINEERING. A NEW MEASUREMENT SYSTEM IS EXAMINED FOR APPLICABILITY TO RAPID DIGITIZATION OF LARGE CONTOURED SURFACES. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF VARIOUS MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS ARE DISCUSSED.
