In 1994 the faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Twente started with a new education concept and introduced a project oriented curriculum for the undergraduate program. This paper explains the design, implementation and evaluation of a design and manufacturing project as part of the education program for the first year. The objectives are formulated, the general structure of the project assignment is specified and the results of implementation are considered.
