Efforts like Profile 21, Manufacturing 21, and Curricula 2000 have researched the needs and deficiencies in manufacturing education. However, much remains to be done in providing students with a global view of manufacturing systems. Academia, like industry, suffers from functional isolation. Students are often tossed over the wall from engineering materials to engineering design to manufacturing without much interaction between different areas.
