This paper discusses how systems engineering can provide the mechanical engineer with a system-oriented view, a generic language, and a toolbox consisting of systems engineering methods useful in common work situations where problems are ill-defined, create conflicts between goals and requirements, and require a careful definition of what is relevant inside and outside the problem domain.
