A major challenge in teaching students how to design and manage manufacturing systems is finding a suitable lab experience that exposes them to the multifaceted issues and complex interactions associated with actual production systems. Such exposure is essential to gaining an appreciation for how production systems operate and how to make effective design and control decisions. Like most engineering disciplines, a combination of both theory and practice is essential if a student is to be adequately prepared to embark on a successful career in manufacturing.
