The global manufacturing environment is rapidly changing. To remain competitive in the next century, the industry needs well trained design and manufacturing engineers. To satisfy this need, the present systems for education and training may have to be reevaluated and improved. This paper reviews the findings of a NSF workshop on Design and Manufacturing Education and Research in Germany and U.S.A. held in June 1994 with the participation of a group of selected educators and administrators from Germany-Aachen and Berlin and the U.S.A.
