Over the past five years, the University of Michigan has launched a comprehensive effort in support of manufacturing education. This has led to an environment where manufacturing engineers and managers from industry work hand-in-hand with manufacturing faculty and students from the university in both education and research. Manufacturing engineering forms a core of these activities in partnership with the School of Business Administration and additional involvement from the School of Art and Design and College of Literature, Science and the Arts. This paper provides an overview of each of the elements of this comprehensive effort, as well as their integration.
