The German system of higher education is arranged into universities, colleges of art and music, and Fachhochschule institutions. The German Fachhochschule institutions were unique until a few years ago when other countries began to introduce this new type of institution into their own higher education systems. The Fachhochschule can be described as a University of Applied Technology or simply University of Technology.
