This paper discusses the increasing need for manufacturing education to address global issues in the 21st century, and looks at mechanisms for achieving this, based on the principles of global cooperation and equitable wealth distribution. The present global IMS (Intelligent Manufacturing Systems) research program is taken as one example thereof, and the importance of education in it, as well as preferable IMS directions for future global sustainability, are considered.
