Growth of poly(urethane) (PUR) clearcoats in domestic passenger cars over the last 10 years has proliferated into use over plastics due to improvements in weathering, gloss, DOI (distinctness of image), environmental etch resistance, toughness, and flexibility versus conventional one component (1K) melamine crosslinked systems. This paper attempts to delineate the properties of two component (2K) PUR plastic coatings in weathering resistance, environmental etch resistance, mar/scratch resistance, friction induced paint damage resistance (gouge resistance), and stone/impact resistance as compared to melamine crosslinked materials. The effects of substrates, where applicable, on coating properties are discussed.
