Applying a coating on a manufactured product is a chemical process. As a chemical process, it can be more difficult to control than mechanical processes. Achieving quality on a daily basis requires good understanding of the science of design and management of finishing systems. This paper reviews the design and management techniques that can be used to control finishing systems for quality. It includes a clear definition of what quality is and how to design for quality operation. Surface defects from dirt and application practices are thoroughly discussed and prevention techniques are reviewed.
