Over the last 5 years, numerous automotive full body powder primer/anti-chip systems have been brought on-line. The facilities and process equipment for powder systems of this magnitude have evolved over this period to an optimized level of performance for the primer/anti-chip application. The next big step for powder in the automotive arena is powder clearcoat. Clearcoat introduces new challenges as its quality is primarily judged by appearance, such as cleanliness and smoothness. This paper explores the changes that will have to be implemented from a facility viewpoint to make this next step a production capable process.
