This paper was written to give anyone a basic understanding of metal finishing and the methods and materials available. It is structured to follow a lecture but should be able to stand alone as an educational tool. The scope of the paper has been narrowed to address only the finishing of casting metals, but the reader should note that the fundamentals apply to forgings, stampings and metal fabrication from 1/4 washers and screws to locomotives and bridge beams.
