Because of typically high forming pressures and surface friction, the tools that form stainless steel alloys experience high levels of wear. PVD and CVD coatings are often used to reduce the rate of tool wear, but several issues must be considered before a selection of the appropriate coating can be made. This paper will review the currently available PVD and CVD coatings, discuss the factors which must be considered prior to coating selection, provide a recommendation guide for specific tool functions, and demonstrate coating performance through actual application case histories.
