This paper deals with the trackability issue relative to the probe of a scanning coordinate measuring machine. A spring mass damper model of the probe was developed and the frequency was plotted using Matlab. Subsequently, samples with sinusoidal surfaces were machined on the wire EDM (circular surfaces with sinusoidal patterns on them). The probe was then used to trace these surfaces which would in reality correspond to a sinusoidal force input. A comparison is made between the theoretical and measured values.
