Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is an internationally accepted method of specifying dimensional tolerances on engineering drawings. The current US standard for GD&T is ASME Y14.5M-1994, Dimensioning and Tolerancing. The GD&T method of tolerancing is superior to general tolerancing (also known as plus/minus or linear tolerancing) in many respects. Linear tolerancing is ambiguous and can yield tolerance boundaries that do not reflect design intent, or are not achievable due to locations of zero tolerance. GD&T is much more clearly defined, and tolerances that meet design intent can be applied.
