One of the trends that currently drives manufacturing improvement efforts is the move to apply approaches pioneered in high-volume manufacturing to custom manufacturing operations. For example, Just-In-Time approaches developed for the automobile industry have been applied to one-of-a-kind products ranging from uniquely-defined individual pagers to ocean-going ships. This paper will address one engineer's experience in this area.
