The quenchant is an important part of the heat treating process. Initially, the user and the quenchant supplier decide upon the media to obtain the desired metallurgical and dimensional properties. Many times, little thought is given to the maintenance of the quenchant, while the rest of the heat treating equipment receives routine checks and maintenance. This paper will cover the simple procedures that should be routine in every heat treating shop, whether the quenchant be water, aqueous solution, oil (warm or hot), or molten salt. Other non-routine procedures will also be covered. The parts being heat treated will always be the same, only if all of the heat treating parameters (including the quenchant) are the same.
