Compression tests were conducted on solid aluminum billets and ring test samples. During compression the friction at the surface was measured with two variations of the cantilever sensor, each of which gave a true, point by point measurement of surface friction forces. It will be shown how friction varies across the billet surface and across the surface of the ring test sample, in unlubricated testing. Examples of the results for compression tests of up to 30% reduction will be shown. The Coulomb friction model will be used to illustrate how the experimental results can be interpreted. Also, the existence of the neutral zone in the ring test will be verified and its location shown accurately.
