HONING HAS BEEN TRADITIONALLY CONDUCTED WITH ABRASIVE STICKS MOUNTED ON A TOOL HOLDER WHICH HAS SOPHISTICATED EXPANSION AND CENTERING MECHANISMS. HOWEVER, ABRASIVE BRUSHES FOR ENGINE CYLINDER HONING HAVE CREATED A NEW INTEREST IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY BECAUSE OF THEIR INHERENT SELF-EXPANDING AND CENTERING CAPABILITIES AND THEIR SIMPLER AND MORE ECONOMICAL SETUP. THIS PAPER PRESENTS AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON TWO TYPES OF BRUSH-HONING TOOLS AVAILABLE COMMERCIALLY: ABRASIVE BALLS AND ABRASIVE BRISTLES. THEIR RESPECTIVE PERFORMANCES AS MEASURED BY HONING THRUSTS AND TORQUES, STOCK REMOVAL RATES, SURFACE FINISH AND INTEGRITY, AND TOOL LIFE HAVE BEEN SYSTEMATICALLY EVALUATED OVER A WIDE RANGE OF HONING CONDITIONS. THIS STUDY ALSO HAS IDENTIFIED THE APPLICATION OPPORTUNITIES AND PRACTICAL LIMITATIONS OF THESE BRUSH HONING TOOLS.
