Hot forging dies fail mainly because of wear as a result of the complex thermomechanical and tribological loading. An increase in tool life can be achieved through thermochemical surface treatment and forging with little scale. Both processes, however, lead to an increase of the die surface temperature. The lowering of the thermal load of the die surfaces by intensive cooling reduces the damage of structure and therefore the wear of the dies considerably.
