One prerequisite for performing metal forming research is a dedicated, medium capacity press. A unique conversion of a mechanical press to one that is hydraulically powered was undertaken to fulfill this need. The reconstructed press enables the researcher to more easily control punch velocity and to stop at any point during the process without the need to complete a full stroke. This conversion was accomplished in a timely and affordable manner and may be considered a feasible alternative to buying a new press.
