Most metal processing systems consist of mechanics driven by a DC motor. To vary speed for various production requirements, the motor is powered by a Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) amplifier, also known as a drive. To coordinate the overall function of the process line, the amplifier is commanded from a digital controller. The decades old DC drive has used SCRs as gating devices in the rectifier section of the D.C. drive. As technology has progressed, so have the capabilities of drive vendors to offer motion control products that can react magnitudes faster than traditional DC technology. This paper discusses the many benefits of retrofitting existing DC motors with PWM controls.
