Various types of materials have always been associated with prototype and short run tooling. Prior to CNC programming and machining, the method of choice was cast tooling. Allowances had to be made by the customer for lead time, accuracy, and cosmetics with this process. Improved aluminum mold materials coupled with machining technology, now provide solutions to accuracy and appearance. Additionally, they offer longer mold life with all types of thermoplastics. With proper maintenance and handling, these molds are not limited to a life span gauged by hundreds of parts. Mold life can now be gauged in the hundreds of thousands.
