Permanent mold (PM) casting involves filling a metal mold cavity with molten metal at low pressures through a sprue system, solidification of the cast metal in the mold, and part extraction from the opened mold. Erosive-corrosive wear, or washout, is a commonly occurring mold failure mechanism that affects mold life, productivity and casting quality. In the PM casting of aluminum (A356) truck clutch housing in a H-13 steel mold extensive soldering and washout was observed in the sprue/dome region which in turn led to deterioration in casting quality. Analysis of the failure indicated that erosion-corrosion to be the dominant mechanism for mold washout.
