This paper focuses on the significance of metallurgical factors and thermal-mechanical processing variables that affect the production and behavior of copper electrical conductors. The influence of residual impurities and their interaction with oxygen additions are discussed in detail, with particular emphasis upon the casting behavior, annealing responses, electrical resistivity, mechanical properties, and formability of the finished wire product. Attention is also given to the bare wire surface, and its importance for critical quality applications such as magnet wire.
