The character of excessive interfacial slip failure is determined for the knifing and guiding zones of a flat wedge CWR process. Using a previously verified finite element model, the interfacial slip behavior between the forming tools and workpiece is analyzed while varying workpiece material, tool geometry, forming velocity and area reduction. The numerical results indicate that the character of the interfacial slip is distinctly different in the knifing and guiding zones. The interfacial slip occurring in the guiding zone is found to dominate the overall slip character, especially for forming velocities over 1 m/s.
