Most tool steels are heat treated in high-pressure gas quench vacuum furnaces. The broad acceptance of this technology is due to good metallurgical results, process simplicity, and reliability of modern vacuum furnaces. Gas quenching in vacuum furnaces is considered a better alternative to the oil or salt quench. Ability to control speed and uniformity of heating and cooling in vacuum furnaces minimizes distortion.
