The term extended enterprise has come into play recently as vertically integrated manufacturing becomes obsolete, leaving original equipment manufacturers (OEMS) to work with more stable, optimized supply bases. Unfortunately, supply management strategies haven't adjusted to this new extended enterprise purchasing environment. Time-based supply management represents a new approach to managing suppliers based on their order fulfillment effectiveness. It allows for individual management of suppliers - as opposed to broad brush supply base mandates - and represents a strategy that can lead to the win-win relationships that OEMS have talked about for years but are, in fact, difficult to find.
