TOMORROW'S WORKERS WILL BE NEEDED FOR THEIR PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITIES IN INTERFACING TECHNOLOGIES. THE TRAINING OF NEWCOMERS TO THE ENTERPRISE AND THE PROPER USE OF THOSE ALREADY EMPLOYED WILL BECOME CRITICAL FOR NEW APPROACHES TO MANAGING AND DEVELOPING THE WORK FORCE. MANUFACTURING MANAGERS MUST DEVELOP AN ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE THAT SUPPORTS TEAMWORK, KNOWLEDGE WORKERS, AND TOTAL INVOLVEMENT IN ORDER TO MEET CORPORATE OBJECTIVES. RETRAINING MUST CONCENTRATE ON SEVERAL CONCEPTS, NAMELY, TAKING THE WORKER FROM WHERE HE IS, BUILDING ON OLD SKILLS, DEVELOPING A CULTURE OF CONFIDENCE, AND THE IRRELEVANCY OF AGE AS A FACTOR IN RETRAINING. THE BUILDING OF SUCH CULTURES AND THE RETRAINING OF THE WORK FORCE, REINFORCED BY SEVERAL SUCCESS STORIES, IS THE FOCUS OF THIS PAPER.
