ABRASIVE WATERJETS (AWJS) HAVE BEEN USED FOR LINEAR CUTTING, TURNING, MILLING, DRILLING, AND WAFER CUTTING. IN THIS PAPER, MACHINING DATA FOR THESE OPERATIONS ARE PRESENTED FOR ADVANCED MATERIALS SUCH AS METAL MATRIX COMPOSITES, LAMINATED COMPOSITES, HIGH-STRENGTH ALLOYS, CERAMICS, AND CERAMIC COMPOSITES. BOTH QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE EFFECTS OF THE AWJ PARAMETERS (E.G., WATERJET PRESSURE AND ABRASIVE TYPE, SIZE, AND FLOW RATE) ON THE MACHINING RESULTS ARE DISCUSSED. THE RESULTS CONSIDERED ARE VOLUME REMOVAL RATE, DEPTH OF CUT, SURFACE FINISH, AND OTHER QUALITATIVE SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS. IN GENERAL, THE USE OF AWJS FOR MACHINING HAS MANY TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC ADVANTAGES OVER EXISTING METHODS. AN AWJ-BASED MACHINING CENTER WILL OFFER MULTIPLE MACHINING CAPABILITIES FOR A WIDE RANGE OF MATERIALS.
