THE PAPER DESCRIBES THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ADAPTIVE CONTROL SYSTEM FOR A CNC CYLINDRICAL GRINDING MACHINE, FROM INITIAL INVESTIGATIONS AT A UNIVERSITY BASED GRINDING RESEARCH GROUP TO FORTHCOMING AVAILABILITY AS A FEATURE FOR COMMERCIAL MACHINES. THE SYSTEM OPTIMIZED THE PERFORMANCE OF INFEED CYCLES BY MAINTAINING A DESIRED GRINDING POWER LEVEL AND BY COMPENSATING FOR DEFLECTIONS. GRINDING RESULTS ARE PRESENTED ILLUSTRATING THE MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS IN PRODUCTIVITY THAT CAN BE ACHIEVED WITHOUT SACRIFICING PART QUALITY.
