THIS PAPER PRESENTS AN INVESTIGATION OF THE CHANGING DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR OF THE MACHINE-TOOL- WORKPIECE SYSTEM WITH VARIATION OF CUTTING SPEED, DEPTH OF CUT, FEED RATE AND FEED DIRECTION IN TURNING. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF STABLE CUTTING, CHATTER DEVELOPMENT AND FULLY DEVELOPED CHATTER REGIONS ARE DESCRIBED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT CHANGING THE PROCESS PARAMETER VALUES AND PROCESS CONFIGURATION CAN HAVE A LARGE, UNEXPECTED, NONLINEAR EFFECT ON DYNAMIC SYSTEM BEHAVIOR.
