WORKPIECE SURFACE FINISH AND WHEEL WEAR WERE INVESTIGATED FOR THE GRINDING OF A VERTICAL FACE, OR SIDEFACE, USING ALUMINUM OXIDE WHEELS UNDER CONTINUOUS DRESSING CONDITIONS. IT WAS FOUND THAT, WHEN THE WHEEL SIDEWALL WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY REMOVED, THE FIRST 2.54 MM OF THE GRINDING WHEEL SIDEWALL INCLUDING THE WHEEL CORNER, ACCOUNT FOR ALL THE GRINDING FORCES IN THE VERTICAL, HORIZONTAL AND TRANSVERSE DIRECTIONS, AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THE SIGNIFICANT GRINDING DONE ON THE SIDEFACE.
