An ideal model material, made of copper fibers embedded in polyester, was machined to determine the effects of fiber orientation, take rake angle, depth of cut, and cutting speed on chip formation. When cutting workpiece with fibers oriented away from the cutting direction, the fibers were cut by shearing and tensile fracture. For workpiece with fibers inclined towards the cutting tool the fibers failed by shearing and bending; also fiber-matrix debonding below the cutting plane was observed. Fiber-matrix debonding depth, machining forces, and machining stress were shown to be a function of the fiber orientation.
