Coated abrasives can now be made by engineering specific topographies into an abrasive coating. A matrix containing grinding mineral can be precisely formed into a variety of shapes on a backing to provide a three-dimensional coating. The resulting coated abrasive possesses a well-defined surface allowing good initial cut, long life and consistent surface finish. An attempt to understand some relationships between performance and topography is made in this paper.
