A time-domain energy-based analysis is presented as a viable approach to realizing an analytical solution for chatter vibration level. Prediction of chatter vibration level makes it possible to assess a priori the potential damage to equipment should the stability limit be unexpectedly exceeded during process operation. The objective here is to demonstrate the usefulness of the energy-based approach; therefore, preliminary results derived by considering regeneration dating back only one tooth period are presented.
